THE MAKING OF OUR KAYAK, THE RED DEVIL, 43 YEARS AGO
Our handmade plywood kayak was constructed in 1974.
The frame was made from plywood and marine plywood was cut to size and screwed onto the frame by hand using brass screws.
This kayak is tested in the Straits of Malacca and was seaworthy.
Later, we added a foot controlled rudder system, 8 ft. mast and a black cotton sail.
By doing so, we converted our kayak into a sail boat.
This kayak was also used to teach scouts about kayaking.
From our workshop in Malacca, we made 3 boats.
1 kayak with canvas covering but it listed to one side at sea launching. Failure. We even painted a fierce looking shark face at its bow.
2nd. boat was a flat plywood rowing boat which can sit 4 persons. Seaworthy as well.
We donated it to the Malacca High School Scouts Troops at their Scout den.
Our last boat made by us was our kayak below.

Some friends tried out our kayak in 1975. We had a roof rack to carry it on our Morris wagon as well. |
